What damages a deck

Sunlight. Fades the colors and yellows the edges. A windowsill is for a night of moonlight, not a month of afternoons.
Humidity. Cards warp and stick. Bathrooms and damp basements are out.
Bending. Back pockets, tight bags, and hard riffle shuffles all leave creases.
Rubber bands. They dent the edges and leave a sticky line as they age. Use a ribbon or a hair tie with fabric on it.
Food and hand oils. Wash your hands, keep the snacks on the other side of the table.

If you like, put the deck back in order after a session. It's a tidy way to check you have all 78 cards, and some readers count it as a cleanse.
Rotate between decks if you own several. The deck that gets used wears; the deck that sits stays perfect. Mix it up.
When a card does get bent, press it under a heavy book for a few days. It won't be new, but it'll lie flat.
